Brief Resume

Artist's Proof A/P
Years ago it was customary for people to collect artist's proofs most often because
in the French tradition of printmaking the artist worked closely with a printer who
inspected the proofs submitted by the printer and marked his choice "bon a tier"
(ready to print), and signed the prints as a guide for the edition. Since collectors felt
this print was the first to meet the artists approval, it was therefore more desirable.
Because artists now print editions themselves and give equal care to the first and last
prints in an edition, this fixation of the artist's proof as the most accurate state has diminished.
